BRIGHT SPOTS & NEWS FLASHES S P R I N G M A R C H 2 0 1 4 EDUCATION BY THE NUMBERS (continued from cover) too...smaller class sizes! Less children in the classroom means more individual attention for each child! Expanded class offerings including - more technology, math, science and engineering courses to help our kids gain a technologi- cal edge. Additional counselors would also be a tremendous help to our students for academic planning, goal setting, and the college application process. Parents need to be informed. Our schools can't get any of the aforementioned items by donating to the PTA. Many parents donate directly to their child's school but PTA's and Booster Clubs pay for site specific needs like classroom ma- terials, field trips and more. PEF is the only organization that pays for people and district-wide programs that impact our students overall quality of education. Education Foundations are beginning to raise more and more for their respective school districts and suggested do- nation amounts are on the rise. The Peninsula Education Foundation suggests an annual $500 donation per child - just $2.75 a day! That's less than your favorite Starbucks latte and one of the lowest suggested donation amounts in acadamically comparable districts; a bargain when you consider the chart below. Still, what's most important is that all of our school fami- lies participate, at whatever level you can, to help keep our Palos Verdes public schools among the top schools in California and the nation! Our schools are great but they can be even better with your help. Please donate today. www.pvpef.org Peninsula Education Foundation $500 Education Foundation Cost Comparison Chart 2013-14 School Year Manhattan Beach Education Foundation $1,500 Hermosa Beach Education Foundation $1,000 La Cañada Flintridge Education Foundation $2,500 San Marino Education Foundation $2,000 The PVPUSD school calendar has 179 school days for the 2013-14 school year; in 2014-15 the PVPUSD school calendar will increase to 180 school days.
