HIGH SCHOOL STEM Programs SMERT (Science, Math, Engineering, Robotics and Technology) at Peninsula High School and PVIT (Palos Verdes Institute of Technology) are two of the most highly regarded high school engineering programs in the nation, regularly producing competition teams that often place higher than university teams. These programs have launched many of our graduates into prestigious university engineering programs. College & Career Centers This valuable resource at Peninsula and Palos Verdes High Schools provides students and parents with informa- tion and guidance through the college application, admissions, financial aid and career decision-making pro- cesses. Our outstanding College & Career Center staff arranges for admission representatives to visit our high schools from over 100 colleges and universities, helping students find their match that complements individual needs. Counselors Counselors play a vital role in helping students navigate the complexities of high school by supporting their academic, emotional and social well-being. They assist with course selection, academic planning and college preparation, keeping students on track for graduation and achieving their educational goals. By providing a safe space for students to express their feelings and cope with stress, counselors address emotional challenges and promote mental health awareness. They also teach essential life skills such as time management, goal-set- ting and self-advocacy, preparing students for the demands of adulthood. More counselors keep district ratios at 350 students per counselor instead of the state average of 1:900. A high school education serves as a critical stepping stone toward future success in various aspects of life, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for future academic pursuits and career opportu- nities. Additionally, it fosters personal growth and social development, helping students become informed, responsible citizens ready to navigate the challenges of adult life. Our high schools are routinely recognized for academic excellence at local, state and national levels.
