S U M M E R A U G U S T 2 0 1 3 MY CHILDREN ALREADY GRADUATED Congratulations! Did you know that 10% of our donors are alumni parents? Some families donate for decades after their children have graduated because they are grateful for what their children received from PEF and the PVPUSD. Many also recognize that their property values are supported by keeping our schools great. I DON'T DONATE BECAUSE I'VE BEEN DISAPPOINTED BY A PROGRAM AREA FUNDED BY PEF You donate and of course you want to see results. So do we. You've seen class sizes go up at the same time that PEF is funding $1.5M in teaching positions to keep class sizes smaller. The problem is that state funding cuts have been so drastic for so many years that the cuts each year have out-paced our fundraising. We do have smaller class sizes in our district than would be possible with state funding alone. Imagine if PEF did not provide funding for additional teaching positions. 3rd grade classes of 45 are not unheard of in Los Angeles. The solution is to donate, not to withhold a donation. Regarding the quality of a program we fund, we want to hear from you. We survey all donors periodically to learn which programs are meet- ing parent expectations. We want to provide funding for the programs you care about and provide enough funding to make them the best possible. PROPOSITION 30 PASSED - PROBLEM SOLVED Proposition 30 is a temporary, six year measure, that prevented $6 million in additional cuts to our schools. Unfortnately, it wasn't a cure-all and it did not provide additional funds for our schools. AT PVPUSD ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS If you noticed parents helping with PE lessons at elemen- tary schools in the last year, you're not alone. PEF noticed too and we've stepped up to help! Beginning this 2013- 2014 school year, PEF will fund Physical Education teachers at each of our ten elementary schools! The PE program will be aligned to California Physical Education content standards, using SPARK, a program supported by the Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. SPARK PE was designed to be more inclusive, active, and fun than traditional PE classes and after 20 years of research and field testing nationwide, SPARK PE has been found to be one of the best physical education programs in the world. The positive effects of SPARK PE include: Students also benefit from PE instruction because teachers are able to use the extra time in the classroom for lesson preparation and review of materials. AS LONG AS PARENTS IN DISTRICTS LIKE OURS DONATE, THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT FUND SCHOOLS AS IT SHOULD. School funding has been a problem in California for over 30 years. If we wait for Sacramento to fix it, we could be waiting a very long time. Not donating won't make the government change its funding formula; not donating only hurts the students in our schools. Many people are unaware that the PVPUSD has tried to affect change in Sacramento. For years, a group of PVPUSD parents visited our state representatives in Sacramento to lobby for a change in the State's education funding formula. Our pleas went un- heard. We need to be proactive and continue supporting our PVP schools. Your child only has one chance at a great educa- tion. Waiting for the government to solve its problems first will only harm your child, and our entire community. I ALREADY SPEND SO MUCH ON MY CHILD'S ACTIVITIES, TUTORING AND SPORTS Your child's school day is their educational foundation, not an extra. And it's not the extras that define our community; it's the emphasis PV residents place on education. Our schools are the backbone of our com- munity. They bind us together and attract families, like ours, who care about the quality of our schools. It's in our interest and our children's interest- to maintain the academic excellence our schools are known for. Please consider a donation to PEF. Visit www. pvpef.org or simply mail your donation in the envelope provided. Thank You! • Enjoyment of PE • Increased physical activity • Improved teacher instruction • Academic achievement • Fitness Acheivment • Sport skills development
