Bryan Godbold, a dedicated fifth-grade teacher at Mira Catalina Elementary School, is bringing the world of journalism to his students, thanks to a 2024 Chuck Miller Teacher Grant. His innovative Fifth Grade Journalism Newspaper Project is giving young writers a chance to explore storytelling, develop critical thinking skills, and produce their very own school newspaper. C H U C K M I L L E R T E A C H E R G R A N T Fifth Grade Journalists at Mira Catalina Elementary School Make Headlines Each group of four students takes on specific newsroom roles: publisher, editor, layout director, and photographer. Together, they produce at least 12 articles covering lead features, current events, student government, sports, environmental issues, and even a comic strip. With guidance from Kate McLaughlin, an associate professor of Journalism at El Camino College, students are learning journalism basics—from interviewing and researching to writing and editing. By bringing journalism into the classroom, the Chuck Miller Teacher Grant is not only fostering a love for writing but also empowering young students to become engaged storytellers in their community. We salute teachers like Bryan Godbold, who go above and beyond to create meaningful learning experiences for their students. Mr. Godbold works with students on their journalism project. Ms. McLaughlin works closely with students, guiding them through article writing and interview skills while giving them a taste of life in a real newsroom. "This project is about more than just writing," said Mr. Godbold. "It is about giving students a voice and showing them that their ideas matter. They are not just learning how to report the news—they are learning how to think critically, ask questions, and communicate effectively."
